Regrettably, unfulfilled is the way several long-time Christians describe how they feel despite the fact that they are very busy doing good works. Many literally dash from one committee meeting to another, then to a board meeting, only to return in short order for choir rehearsal without pausing to understand that busyness does not necessarily equate to stewardship. They are doing what they think is expected of them but are left feeling tired and empty. Perhaps this malaise comes from reacting to what others expect instead of doing what God shaped them to do. Each believer is designed in a particular way which is called our spiritual gift. It is incumbent upon believers to identify, develop, and operate in their gifts to fulfill their Christian responsibilities.

God’s master plan includes the fundamental premise that each believer is an essential part of the puzzle and will assume their assigned responsibilities. Following is a list that may help you recognize if you’re operating in your special gift. You know you are working in your gift when:

  • You have a sense of joy
  • The work is energizing
  • The work is personally satisfying
  • You lose track of time when doing this work
  • People respond positively
  • You have passion
  • You are motivated to action
  • People are blessed
  • God is glorified

Others may recognize your gift before you do, so if you are unsure, one place to start is to ask others close who understand spiritual gifts to you to help you flush out things that they see that may be your gift.

If you have a persistent, nagging feeling and a strong desire to serve in a particular way but have not been given an opportunity to do so, here are a few things you can do:

  • Acknowledge it to yourself-aloud
  • Share it with a friend
  • Research the subject
  • Take a spiritual gifts assessment
  • Identify and confide with someone who demonstrates the same gift
  • Assume personal responsibility to take action

God often asks people to do things that are outside the box and, therefore, intimidating; but don’t let fear hinder you. Getting started is the first step toward breaking through the fear of doing something new and different. As believers, we are responsible to identify, develop, and operate in our gifts. The kingdom depends on us. Being consistently unfulfilled should not be a normal state for believers. After all, how can we bring unbelievers into the fold, or help new believers mature, if we’re unfulfilled?! The kingdom needs all of us.
